Riffer Collab Obscure References
For Season Five

--

Five Riffers, Episode 1: Marielle
(Riffers: Miyu, Kyo K., Mai, Tails, Leah)

(Part One)

Leah: I'll be gentle with you just like my creator was with me... which means that I won't be gentle at all. Oh, well.

Reference to how Leah is treated like crap in her own series. She's a female, has no lover, and is infertile. Those are huge sins in "Twilight" land.

Tails: I thought that being a member of Wall Street or AIG was the greatest sin.

Tails is most likely referencing the AIG incident, where they tried to sue the government. Government bails AIG out, AIG thanks them by contemplating a lawsuit. Because it's America.

Leah: That's gonna suck if they have to share a boyfriend. *grimaces* Damn it.

Reference to Leah's backstory in the series. Her lover left her for her cousin.

Leah: Hey, she was reading "Eclipse" earlier! Where did "Twilight" come from?!
Tails: It's a shapeshifting book.
Leah: *smirks*

wolves fighting for mating rights, and so on.
Leah: *shifts her eyes* Uh... huh.

(The second riff from Leah is in Part Two.) For those who didn't read the series (or just don't know)... Leah is a shapeshifter from the same pack as Jacob. Her second riff can also be referenced to her lover leaving her in the series that she hailed from.

Leah: And then she breaks up with him in a few months and writes a song that bashes him. Now that's a true love story.

Leah's slamming the "current" incarnation of Taylor Swift... in lyrics that were once sung by Taylor Swift. Yes, that is possible.

(Part Two)

Kyo: Because it's the circle of life, Simba!

Obvious reference to "The Lion King".

Three Riffers, Episode 3: Women Decoded
(Riffers: Cassy, Keiko, Kaoru)

Cassy: Lies, lies, lies! They're all lies! *thinks* Now where did I hear that before?

Reference to "Kusanagi's Wrath"... mostly. Cassy didn't swear like Kyo did in that fic, but it's enough to bring a callback.

Keiko: Time to find a job, Peggy Bundy clone.

Unfortunately, it's obscure enough to mention. Peggy Bundy is the lazy housewife from "Married... With Children".

Keiko: And of course, it's never her fault for anything that goes wrong. I really must be watching an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" here.

Oh, boy. Some people hate this show because of Debra. In later seasons, she's shown that she can do no wrong despite her whining and abuse of Ray. Sure, Ray can be a snarky jerk at times, but he never shoved his wife into a bookshelf!

Four Riffers, Episode 3: Love with Good Taste
(Riffers: Sonia, Benimaru, Tomoko, Miyuki)

(Part One)

Benimaru: Probably. And of course, I wouldn't be surprised if she managed to run into her "Destined Love" in about... oh, two minutes.

Callback to "A Story of Destined Love"... where that actually happened, hence the quotations.

Sonia: For some reason, I wish that you were stuck to a Bouffalant.
Benimaru, Miyuki, Tomoko: A what?
Sonia: Oh, look it up.

In-joke (a crappy in-joke, no less). The writer has Pokémon Black. The trainer's name in said game is... Sonia.

(Part Four)

Tomoko: Yeah, and where the hell are the commas? They sound like robots here.
Sonia: They're on strike. Topaz must've joined up with Kathryn to cut their pay or something.

Callback to the poor formatting in "The White Hedgehog".

(Part Five)

Miyuki: I think that Sonia and some other pink hedgehog named Amy had the same reaction.
Sonia, Amy:
Don't remind me!

Another in-joke. The writer also has Pokémon White2. The trainer's name in said game is... Amy. Also, the writer hates Chargestone Cave. Still does.

Sonia: I hope they landed in Glitch City.

For non-Pokémon fans, Glitch City is a Generation I term referring to... a glitchy city, obviously. You can only escape if you have a member in your party that knows Fly or Teleport. If you save in Glitch City and have neither of those moves, well... you're pretty much boned.

Four Riffers, Episode 4: Fairy of nature, Mistress of the Forest
(Riffers: Sonic, Kyo L., Jessie, Akiko)

(Part Two)

Kyo: Bella's selfless, dammit!

Reference to the "Twilight" series sporkings headed by Das Mervin. One of the counts is called "I'm Selfless, Dammit!" (Unless you're reading the "Breaking Dawn" Book Two sporkings... in which the title count changes into what Kyo just said, due to said book being in Jacob's POV.)

Akiko: Never. They're just going to talk and it'll all be over like that.

Reference to the cop out in "Breaking Dawn".

Sonic: Good job, Ana.

Sonic's referencing Anastasia Steele's constant lip biting in the "Fifty Shades" series.

Jessie: Wait, Bella can feel guilt? Sure she wasn't sinning her ass off back there?

Another reference to the "Twilight" series sporkings. Another one of the counts is called "Sin Thine Ass Off". As Mervin describes it... "In Meyerland, as long as you acknowledge what you’re doing is wrong, you can just keep right on doing it."

Sonic: I didn't know that Juri was one of them.

Sonic's referencing Cammy's rival dialogue with Juri in "Super Street Fighter IV".

(Part Three)

Jessie: Oh, crap. That stupid "inner goddess" found her way over here!

Another "Fifty Shades" series reference; Ana constantly refers to that stupid "inner goddess" when she does something liberating, sexually or otherwise. (Then again, Ana never really does anything "liberating", because she's a dumb Bella expy.)

Jessie: For the response to the command, please pay $15. Capcom put it in as on-disc DLC.

Reference to the recent practices on certain Capcom games. (Came to a head in "Street Fighter x Tekken".)

Four Riffers, Episode 5: Common Sense is Dead
(Riffers: Amy, Rory, Dante, Vergil)

Rory: *puts an item called "Meyer Goggles" on, looks at Amy* Whoa!
Amy: What?
Rory: I can't see you, Amy. You're invisible.
Amy: Is it because I like to do things aside from liking Sonic so much?
Rory: Uh-huh. Don't forget the fact that you're not a wonderful vampire Sue.
Amy: I figured as much.

Reference to a joke post by Das Mervin. You can have a look through the Meyer Goggles your own self by this link.

Dante: That and Bella has no motivation in life.
Vergil: I believe that you have stolen my line.
Dante: Yeah, you're welcome.

References one of Vergil's taunts to Dante. "Where's your motivation?"

Three Riffers, Episode 4: Do Shut Up
(Riffers: Emi, James, Juri)

James: Yeah, Brendan Fraser's ex didn't wait that long.

Reference to the actor's ex demanding $900,000 annually for child support.

Emi: And then Comcast bought it and ran the company into the ground.

Reference to NBC's fifth place status.

Emi: I think this must've been that part of "The White Hedgehog" or "Defying Destiny" that Miss Rose spoke about one time. *rubs her back* Now that I mention it... I should never bring that "White Hedgehog" thing up around her again.

Reference to when Amy unintentionally kept slapping Emi on her back during the "A Story of Destined Love" riffing.

Four Riffers, Episode 6: Sealing the Elements
(Riffers: Manic, Axl, Tomoko, Jayleen)

(Part One)

Manic: *grumbles* I'm tired of that damn word, man.

Yes, Manic still hates "Ultimate".

Manic: This's some "Hell's Kitchen" crap right here.

Reference to the terrible cliffhangers in the series. Seasons 10 and 11 were rife with awful "To Be Continued" cliffhangers.

Manic: You should see Cassy's room, then. Though... I don't know why she has a sparkly skeleton there.

Reference to the ending of the "Sabrina's Adventure" riffing. Cassy has the old Sabrina's skeleton in her room for decoration. Such a morbid kitty.

Two Riffers, Episode 2: The New Girl (SerketChaos Version)
(Riffers: Kyo L. and Angelique)

(Part One)

Kyo: Did that shack come from 1-800-RENT-A-SHACK?

Callback to Sonic's riff in "Meet Shyloh"... which makes no sense in Kyo's case for two reasons; he barely knew Sonic personally and he didn't participate in that riffing.

Kyo: Personally, I blame the Author Alliance.
Angelique: I blame Critics United.

Those two groups are hated on the Pit. Mainly because they took to flaming and considered themselves the "Fanfiction Police". (As of this writing, the group that Kyo mentioned disbanded a few years ago).

Kyo: *as Sonic* Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine!

Reference to "DragonBall Z Abridged". Specifically, it's one of Vegeta's many trademark lines.

Kyo: East Asia: Old Temple.
Angelique: East Asia: Deserted Temple.

Those are stages in Street Fighter IV.

Kyo: ...She's going to be the new Rina if we don't get a color soon.

Reference to "New Girl!?", where nobody knows what Rina is.

(Part Two)

Kyo: And then Keira kicks Knuckles's ass in two seconds flat. Oh, wait... wrong story. Thank God it's the wrong story.

Callback to "Sabrina's Adventure".

Soon they arrived at the beaches of SS,
Angelique: ...Minnow.

The S.S. Minnow was the fictional boat that capsized before the events of "Gilligan's Island".

Kyo: Oh, so we're playing Sonic '06, Lili? *as Sonic* Darn! We're not gonna make it! Let's speed up!

Reference to the first Mach Speed section of the game in Wave Ocean. Which begs the question; if Sonic knew that he wasn't going to make it, then what was the point of that stupid section?!

(Part Three)

Angelique: Because she was OOC!
Kyo: Yeah, you know me!

Kyo's actually referencing the Naughty by Nature song "O.P.P.".

Keira took off felling much better.Soon she found Knuckles
Kyo: ...and then she punched him in the face because... *plays a recording of Manic shouting "Grrrl Powah!"*

Yet another reference to "Sabrina's Adventure". Because it's cute to punch someone that you just met in the face. *obvious sarcasm*

Angelique: *wakes up* Oh, encore! *mutters* Do I get a refund for this, Kyo?
Kyo: Nah. Sonia said that I can't get refunds during a different fic.

The fic in question was "Ultimate". Kyo's probably still waiting for his money.

Five Riffers, Episode 2: Street Fighter: No Time 4 Love
(Riffers: Amy, Kyo K., Keiko, Juniper, Julia)

(Part One)

Juniper: I think we need to run that through Google Translate.
Amy: No, we don't; it'll break it. Remember the last time Google was down? People flipped their lids!

Reference to the five minute Google Blackout on August 16, 2013. Yes, people did flip their lids.

(Part Two)

Juniper: And Heero was mad at all the penguins die!

Reference to the Peter Chimaera fic "Gundam Wing Final Battle".

Four Riffers, Episode 7: Rainbow Eclipse
(Riffers: Miyu, Emi, Axl, Akiko)
(highlight between the brackets for spoiler) [Backup Riffers: Cassy, Rory, Miyuki, Kaoru]

(Parts One, Two, and Five)

*Akiko hits her riffmates with a toy sledgehammer and shouts at them to remember things when they come up.*

This is another reference to Das Mervin's Twilight Sporkings. In Akiko's case, the counts she's referring to are "Sledgehammer of Symbology" and "Subtle Foreshadowing" (but mostly the latter count in this case).

(Part One)

Akiko: Did the CD skip? *as the narrator* Rainbow cape! Rainbow cape! Rainbow cape!

Accidental reference to the Eminem song "Under the Influence".

Axl: Her name is Assho--
Emi: Dante! I mean... Mr. James!

Reference to "DmC: Devil may Cry".

(Part Two)

"It is not what you did, but what you did not do," Sailor Eclipse spat.
Akiko: *as Super Kami Guru*
Clean that up!

Reference to DragonBall Z Abridged.

Emi: Uh... "sick fuck", perhaps? What about "sick fuck"?

Callback to the Esaka Destiny "Saga" (Specials 3-5) as a whole.

Emi: Okay, Kusanagi! We get it, you're going to kill him!

Callback to "A Story of Destined Love".

(Part Three)

Miyu: Why do you think Justin Bieber's still around... sort of?
Rory: I thought he was too busy peeing in buckets and throwing eggs at his neighbor's houses.

Oh, jeez. This was shortly before the pop star's fall from... "grace".

Rory: This is disgusting.
Emi: The fic, the Sue, or the Suethor, Mr. Hancock?
Rory: *thinks for a bit* Uh... yes.
Emi: *gives a blank stare*

Another callback to DragonBall Z Abridged.

Emi: I think they went on strike. Mr. Manic told me about a fic where the commas went on strike...
Axl: Yeah? What was it about?
Emi: *rubs her back a little* Oh, you do not want me to begin.

Callback to when Amy hit Emi's back during the "A Story of Destined Love" riffing.

Axl: Yeah. She's gone. Gone like Kanye West's sanity.
Miyu: We're going to be sued now.

A reference to the "Coinye" fiasco.

(Part Four)

Akiko: Of course not. If Suethors owned any original works, it would plummet farther than Lindsay Lohan's career.
Emi: We are
so going to be sued now.

A jab at how Lindsay Lohan would sue if there was anything that "referenced" her. One such incident revolved a lawsuit involving an E-Trade commercial that called another baby named Lindsay a "milkaholic".

(Part Five)

Miyu: Ask Sony Love. Trust me, I've worked with her fics.

Reference to Miyu's duties as the hostess of the Fanfiction Histories and Mysteries section on the Haven.

Emi: "Darkness"? You know... Sonic goes into a conniption fit every time he hears that word.

Yes, this is the millionth "The White Hedgehog" reference.

Rory: I love you too, Cassy. Now let's have kids and call them the worst Norwegians when they get into the Olympics.

Reference to Gro Johnsrud Langslet, who said that her son (Martin Johnsrud Sundby) was "the worst Norwegian" when he placed 13th in the 15 kilometer Cross Country skiing race at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Hilariously, Cassy and Rory are Americans with no traces of Norwegian descent.

(Part Six)

Rory: *gets a bag of popcorn, rubs his hands together in glee* Good! Good!

Reference to the bug from the "Family Guy" episode "One if by Clam, Two if by Sea".

(Part Seven)

Akiko: *sings* 'Cause you'll be in my heart... yes, you'll be in my heart...

These are obviously lyrics from Phil Collins' "You'll Be In My Heart".

Miyu: *wearing a top hat, waves a wand* Alakazam?

Callback to Miyu's top hat from the "Sonic: Dead or Alive?" riffing.

Miyu: *adjusts glasses* That was as funny as that show "Work It".

Oh, dear. This was a show that only lasted two weeks on ABC in January 2012.

Three Riffers, Episode 5: Because of You
(Riffers: Sonic, Mai, Leah)

(During the alley scene, Sonic makes comparisons to another fic...)

And Sonic is basically right on the money. That scene did have similar shades to "A Story of Destined Love"... if you ignore the part where Yoko didn't get stabbed and Emi, well... did.

Mai: If that is sarcasm... I guess that makes me Bill Gates.
Sonic: Really? *shakes Mai's hand* Y'know... I don't know why you looked so happy in your mugshot.

Reference to his 1977 arrest for a traffic violation.

Sonic: *as Freeza* How do you function?!

Yet another DragonBall Z Abridged reference.

Five Riffers, Episode 3: Strippers and Lobotomies
(Riffers: Sonia, Jessie, James, Jayleen, Poison)

Poison: What a softie. There's worse on the street corners and in the alleys.
James: Or in Marion Barry's hotel room.

Reference to the former Washington D.C. mayor's arrest in 1990 for possession and use of crack cocaine.

Three Riffers, Episode 6: My Real Love
(Riffers: Manic, Rory, Tails)

Rory: Yeah, the author must've been having a field day using them as her mouthpiece, huh?
Manic: I'm a bit shocked. They normally use their crappy Mary Sues to do the deed instead. This is pretty new to me... *remembers another fic* Never mind.

Well, the fic that Manic's referring to is actually "Kii and the Mirror of Chaos". It could be another "The White Hedgehog" callback, but Kathryn just brainwashed everyone there.

Four Riffers, Episode 8: New Allies or New Enemies?
(Riffers: Cassy, Benimaru, Miyuki, Kaoru)
(highlight between the brackets for spoiler) [Backup Riffers: Kyo L., Kyo K., Keiko]

(Part Two)

Cassy: This is starting to sound like the "indigo" fic.

Callback to "Rainbow Eclipse".

Kaoru: Why does that sound like something that my sister would say as she was hitting us with a toy hammer?

Callback to Akiko's toy sledgehammer in the "Rainbow Eclipse" riffing.

(Part Three)

Miyuki: *grumbles* Can't believe that tripping the damn youma had a better effect. Tripping. This crap ass fic...
Cassy: They must've been playing Smash Bros. Brawl if that's the case.

In reference to the much hated mechanic in said game.

Miyuki: Yeah, that's not important. Go to bed so we can focus on the sleeping Sues.
Benimaru: *confused* That doesn't work that way...
Cassy: Yes, it does, dude. Ask Kathryn. She hogged the spotlight so much that she even nabbed it while she was knocked out.
Benimaru: I would ask her, but Sonia shot her in the head.
Cassy: Oh. I forgot that she did that.

Callback to "The White Hedgehog". The "shot her in the head" part references a small conversation between Amy and Emi during the riffing of "A Story of Destined Love".

(Part Four)

Cassy: Reminds me of Kyo and Emi's random telepathy.

Cassy's referring to the random power in "Kusanagi's Wrath".

(Part Five)

Benimaru: And we all know the cure for writer's block... *turns around to face the audience* ...you write a whole bunch of nonsense out and turn it into a sequel.
Cassy: Oh, jeez, dude. Don't remind me of that fic.

Another "Kusanagi's Wrath" reference. This specifically refers to the author's note for that fic.

Keiko: *walks into the room, sits next to Kaoru, looks at Cassy* Well, this feels familiar, doesn't it?
Kaoru: *nods*
Cassy: Yep.

In reference to the three riffers of "Women Decoded".

Kaoru: At least we weren't watching "Attack on Titan".
Miyuki: Yeah, somebody would've been bitten in half after this.

Reference to the 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls/Female Titan arc.
