Intel® NC440BX Server Platform BIOS/Firmware, drivers, and utilities

Installation and use
Beep Code 1-1-1-1
Unrecognized processor. Reseat or replace

Beep Code 4-3-4-3
Faulty or incompatible memory

Chassis intrusion cable does not fit into baseboard
Attach the Columbus II chassis intrusion cable to the front panel circuit board, rather than the connector on the Intel® N440BX Server Board.

Disable the IDE Controller
Either one or both IDE controllers can be disabled through the SSU (System Setup Utility).

EMP "Always active" mode
EMP can be configured for modem mode and either "always active" or "pre-boot only" in BIOS set-up. In "always active" mode, COM2 is not available to the OS. EMP will answer all calls to a modem connected to COM2. In "pre-boot only" mode, EMP will only be active while powered down, and during POST; making COM2 and the modem available to the OS.

Error 0xc0000034 installing Microsoft* Windows NT 4.0
Windows NT* 4.0 setup may hang while reading the second setup diskette, with the error: "Setup has encountered a fatal error while initializing your computers video. Contact your product support representative for assistance. The following status code will assist them in diagnosing the problem: (0,0xc0000034) Setup cannot continue. Power down or reboot your computer now." if an ICP Vortex PCI RAID controller is installed with a BIOS firmware older than v2.55 Update the firmware from icp-vortex.com

Install NetWare* SCSI Drivers
For Novell NetWare* 4.10, the driver SDMSNET4.DSK must be installed instead of a .HAM driver. The ASPI8XX.SYS driver must be loaded with a /V switch in the CONFIG.SYS file

Install Novell* NetWare* 3.12 Operating System
Enter CMOS and under processor settings, clock your processor at 300 MHz or install a 300 MHz or slower processor.
Create a DOS partition on the C: drive and a Symbios directory, and copy the aspi8xx.sys and symcd.sys files to it.
Create a netware.312 directory and copy sdmsnet3.dsk to it.
Create a config.sys file with:
device=c:\Symbios\aspi8xx.sys
device=c:\Symbios\symcd.sys
files=40
buffers=30
Reboot and follow the NetWare 3.12 installation procedure using the sdmsnet3.dsk driver for the SCSI channel
Complete the installation and install the 3.2 enhancement pack or all the 3.12 file updates and patches available on Novell's patch list.
Edit c:\server.312\startup.ncf file to include:
load sym8xxnw.ham slot=10002 (slot number may vary depending one your implementation of the SSU utility)
load sym8xxnw.ham slot =10003 (loaded twice, once for each channel)
Remove the references to sdmsnet3.dsk.
Save and restart NetWare
You may now return the processor speed back to full, or replace with a faster processor.

Install Pro/100+ Ethernet driver on Unixware* 2.1
Download and extract the drivers
Type "sw a:" to extract the Unix drivers to a floppy disk
Login as root
Type "doscp a:eee_uw23.pkg /tmp/eee_uw23.pkg"
Type "pkgadd -d /tmp/eee_uw23.pkg"

Last Known Issues
Emergency Management Port The built-in Emergency Management Port (EMP) provides remote emergency access and control of server resources. EMP offers Operating System-independent, fundamental remote management access regardless of the server's current state or network availability.
Adding Dial-Out Paging Capability The Dial-Out utility provides an "out-of-band" alerting mechanism that allows the server to send a page to an individual if the server is rebooted.
Installing Zero-channel RAID A "zero-channel" RAID adapter is a PCI RAID controller that uses the on-board SCSI channels to implement a cost-effective hardware RAID solution. Installation help for AMI or Mylex controllers is available in the zero-channel RAID overview.

No video during boot
You may experience no video during boot, or no beep code with memory removed, if the BIOS is set for higher clock speed.
To reset the processor speed settings in CMOS:
  1. Clear the CMOS by moving the jumper at jumper block G from pins 1&2 to pins 2&3. Power on the system. Wait for the message:
    8150: NVRAM Clear By Jumper
    ERROR
    8152: NVRAM Data Invalid, NVRAM Cleared
  2. Power down the system and set the jumper back to pins 1&2.
  3. Turn the system on and enter system BIOS. Set the Main / CPU Speed Setting option to the speed of the installed processors. Save changes and reboot the system.

Onboard USB Connector
There is no cable provided by Intel®. Purchase a standard USB cable, such as the Belkin PRO Series USB Motherboard Dual Port Cable (F3U001).
The pin arrangement for the header is:
+5v o o +5v
D- o o D-
D+ o o D+
Gnd o o Gnd

SCO UNIX Open Server * 5.0.4 hangs or gives time out errors
Download the Symbios SCSI drivers file from LSILogic*.
Boot Off the SCO UNIX Boot Disk.
At the boot prompt, type 'link'
When prompted for packages, type 'slha'
If prompted for the slha disk, insert the driver disk
When prompted to "replace a routine, add "slhainit" at the end or quit", type '27'
When prompted to either add or replace a routine, select '2' to replace "slhapoll" routine with "slhainit"
You will be prompted that that the drivers were successfully loaded and asked to insert the BOOT disk.

SCSI configuration for the Intel® NA440BX Server Board
The W-SCSI chain supports sixteen devices. The onboard controller and SCSI backplane each count as a device.
