Installation and Configuration Notes
Redundant Power
A pedestal system must have three power supplies for redundancy. A rack system may have two or three.

Redundant Cooling
A single system fans can fail without compromising the cooling. The fans are not hot-swappable.

Fast-20 Drives
The Adaptec* 7880 chip set supports Fast-20 mode drives with maximum transfer rates of 40 MB/sec. Use the Adaptec SCSI Select utility to configure. Narrow SCSI devices are not supported when in Fast-20 mode.

Hot-swap Hard Drives
The included carriers support 80-pin SCA SCSI-2 hot-swap hard drives 3.5" wide and up to 1.6" high.

Narrow SCSI Drives
Supported in fast/wide mode only, but not recommended in the 5-1/4" peripheral bay due to EMI considerations. Active bus termination is required on the last device.

RAID Capabilities
Add a RAID controller from the list of qualified controllers. Set the jumpers to change the SCSI IDs on the SCSI backplane to change the SCSI IDs if not all hard drives are detected.

Operating Systems Supported by the Server Management Software
Microsoft* Windows NT* and Novell NetWare*.

ECC Memory Support
Memory ECC is supported via ECC logic in the chipset if using standard parity SIMMs or DIMMs. The chipset will detect double bit errors and correct single bit errors.

Third Power Supply Requirements
Ships with two 420 watt power supplies. The system configuration may require more. Please refer to the power table in the Technical Product Specification.

Novell IntraNetWare* 4.11 limit of 16MB
See Novell Technical Information Document 1003164 at Novell* Knowledgebase for instructions on editing the AUTOEXEC.NCF

CPU error messages
  • Missing processor
  • CPU failed
  • "176 previous cpu failure. Slot 1 cpu #01."
  • "177 previous cpu failure. Slot 2 cpu #01"
  • "178 previous cpu failure. Slot 1 cpu #02."
  • "179 previous cpu failure. Slot 2 cpu #02."
  • "180 attempt to boot with failed cpu."

Run System Configuration Utility and retest processors.

Identifying Hot-swap Capabilities
Hot-swap capability is present on Top Assembly numbers whose dash numbers end in 3 (as in -xx3), or if the serial number equal to or higher than:
Product code ALPC0MB2CPC = S/N Z00088552
Product code ALPCD166512C = S/N Z00108949
Product code ALPCD200512C = S/N Z00082658

SCU Reports "Out Of Memory" Errors
To workaround this error, set your CONFIG.SYS to:
device=himem.sys
dos=high,umb
stacks=0,0
lastdrive=b

Hard drives not recognized by system during OS installation
Change SCSI jumpers on SCSI backplane to ID 0-5 and reboot the system.

Server Board system does not power up
Intel® AR450GX Rack-mount Server System has a magnetic chassis interlock switch under the top cover, at the left front of the chassis. This disables all power to the system. This interlock is not present in the Intel® AP450GX Pedestal-mount system. For normal operation, the cover should always be installed.

Compatibility
Microprocessor Combinations Supported
A table showing supported Intel® Pentium® Pro processor combinations by type and stepping is included in the Technical Product Specification.

Optional 4GB memory module ALMEM4GBM0
Optional 4GB memory module ALMEM4GBM0 is available, and fits into the 1GB memory module. The additional memory uses TOSP DRAM's packaged in JEDEC standard 16Mx72 60ns DIMMs only. Memory on the module in organized in 8 banks and 4-way interleaves.
