Windows 95 Joystick Instructions: Tropez and Monte Carlo -------------------------------------------------------- General Notes: * These directions are for both the Tropez and Monte Carlo cards. The following specific files refer to each card: Tropez = TZMODE.EXE, TZACDOS.INI Monte Carlo = MCMODE.EXE, MCACDOS.INI * This procedure should only be used if you are positive that you do not already have a joystick adapter in your system. This could be either a separate card or it could be built on to the motherboard. * Special thanks to David Gasior for his assistance in this procedure. 1.0 Before installation ----------------------- 1. Before you install the Microsoft Joystick driver, you may need to modify the TZACDOS.INI (c:\tropez\dosapps) or MCACDOS.INI (c:\mcarlo) file and make the following changes: [MAD16] MODE=SB GAME_PORT=ENABLED <---Make sure this is enabled! ... 2. Save these settings. 1.1 Installation of Joystick Driver ----------------------------------- 1. From the 'Start' button in Win 95, choose 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel.' 2. Select 'Add New Hardware.' 3. Do NOT have Win95 search for hardware devices. 4. Choose SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS from the list. 5. Scroll down on the left-hand side until you find 'Microsoft.' 6. Select 'MICROSOFT GAMEPORT JOYSTICK.' 7. Continue installing this driver (you will need your original Win95 disk). 8. At the end of the installation, DO NOT restart the computer yet. 1.2 Modifying the Joystick Driver --------------------------------- 1. Go back to the 'Control Panel' through the 'Start' button. 2. Click on the 'SYSTEM' icon. 3. Select 'Device Manager.' 4. Choose 'SOUND, VIDEO, AND GAME CONTROLLERS.' 5. Double-click on the 'Gameport Joystick.' 6. Select 'RESOURCES' 7. Change the following setting: Setting Based on: Basic Configuration 1 (instead of 'Basic Configuration 0.') 8. This configuration should have an input/output range of 200-207 (instead of 201) 9. Click on Next or O.K. to save the settings. 10. When prompted, restart the computer 1.3 Enabling the Joystick on Boot-up ------------------------------------ 1. You will need to locate the TZMODE.EXE or MCMODE.EXE file on your hard drive. This file is normally in the c:\tropez\dosapps directory for the Tropez and the c:\mcarlo directory for the Monte Carlo. 2. Use the RIGHT mouse button to drag this file to the Win95 desktop. 3. Select 'CREATE SHORTCUT HERE.' 4. Click on the new TZMODE.EXE (or MCMODE.EXE) shorcut with the RIGHT mouse button and select 'Properties.' 5. Choose the 'Program' tab. 6. Click on the 'Advanced' button. 7. Put a check next to: "Prevent MS-DOS programs from detecting Windows." 8. Click OK to return to 'Program.' 9. Select 'Minimized' on the line labeled, 'Run.' 10. Put a check next to the CLOSE ON EXIT option. 11. Select OK to save these changes. 1.4 Placing the driver in the Start-up Group -------------------------------------------- 1. You will now need to drag the modified TZMODE.EXE (or MCMODE.EXE) shortcut to the Windows 95 StartUp directory. 2. This directory is a sub-directory of your Windows 95 directory. In the example below, we assume that the directory is still called "Windows." c:\WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP 3. Once the TZMODE.EXE (or MCMODE.EXE) shortcut is copied in the StartUp directory, you can restart the system to enable the driver. This executable will be run every time Win95 is started. 1.5 Verification of Joystick ---------------------------- 1. After installation, you should have a new "Joystick" option in the Win95 Control Panel. 2. Click on this and choose your specific joystick from the list and run the calibration utility. 3. The joystick port will now function for all Win95 applications as well as DOS applications run through Win95.
