ASX Files

Active stream redirector (.asx) files provide the information that NetShow Player needs to receive either unicast or multicast ASF information. There are two types of .asx files, those that are encrypted and those that aren't. Encrypted .asx files are created by the NetShow Server Channel service and are used to receive multicast information. Non-encrypted .asx files can be created by anyone with a text editor and are used to receive unicast information. .Asx files can be sent in e-mail, can be used as a link reference in a Web page, or can exist as a stand-alone file on a hard drive. An .asx file is a link to an .asf file or an ASF stream. When executed, .asx files launch NetShow Player and then seek out the server that contains the .asf file or that is multicasting the ASF stream. This section covers only unicast .asx files because multicast .asx files are encrypted and can be created using the NetShow Server Channel sevice. See the NetShow System Administration Guide documentation for information on creating multicast .asx files.
