Working with Announcements

Announcements are encrypted text files stored with an .asx extension. An announcement points to the channel file (.nsc) containing channel information for the program. Clients use the announcement to find the channel file and retrieve its channel information. Announcements are generated only for programs that contain Active Streaming media.

After you have created an announcement, you can distribute it in a variety of ways:

Store it on Internet Information Server where clients using the embedded player or stand-alone player can access the file through a Web page
Store it in a public directory on a LAN where clients using the stand-alone player can open it
Distribute it through e-mail to clients using the stand-alone player

Note Announcements support programs that contain Active Streaming media. Announcements are not used when multicasting RTP audio or file transfers. In those cases, the client .ocx must be configured to receive the multicast.
