Setting Multicast Scope

The scope of a multicast can be adjusted. You can limit the reach of the multicast to your immediate subnetwork, or expand the scope to the entire Internet. The scope is set by specifying a value for the time-to-live. This value decrements each time the multicast passes through a router. When the value reaches 1, the router stops forwarding the multicast. Values can range from 1 through 255.

NetShow provides the following default values for scope.
Option Value
Local Network 1
Intranet 32
Internet 128

Because the number and configuration of a network's routers actually determine the value that should be used to limit the scope, you may want to set a custom value. Your network administrator can determine the value to use to limit the scope to your intranet.
