Multicasting File Transfers

Use the following steps when creating a program that transfers files using multicast.

The illustration shows NetShow Server and the HTTP server on separate computers. When multicasting files, all software can run on a single computer.

  1. Store the file to multicast on the NetShow server.
  2. On NetShow Server, start NetShow Administrator, connect to the server you want to manage, and then use Manage Programs to create a program. Programs organize one or more media streams for multicast. Add a file to the program by specifying a name for it and other properties, including the file location, the amount of bandwidth to use for the multicast, the destination IP address and port, and the scope of the multicast.

For more information, see Creating a Program and Adding a File Transfer Stream to a Program.

  3. Create a Web page that includes the file transfer control, Nsfile.ocx. When you create the Web page, specify the multicast address where the client computer listens to receive the file. Store the Web page in the appropriate publishing point on the HTTP server to make it available to clients.

For more information, see the NetShow Client SDK.

  4. Using Manage Programs, start the program to begin transferring files.

For more information, see Starting and Stopping a Program.

  5. Clients can now receive the multicast file by retrieving the Web page with the embedded control.
