Multicasting Live RTP Audio

Use the following steps when creating a program that multicasts live audio over RTP.

The illustration shows NetShow Server and the HTTP server on separate computers. For RTP multicasts, all software can run on a single computer.

  1. Connect the audio source to the appropriate input on the server's sound card.
  2. On NetShow Server, start NetShow Administrator, connect to the server you want to manage, and then use Manage Programs to create a program.

Add a live audio stream to the program by specifying a name for it and other properties, including the sound format, the destination IP address and port, and the scope of the multicast.

For more information, see Creating a Program and Adding RTP Live Audio to a Program.

  3. Create a Web page that includes the RTP audio player, Nsrtpaud.ocx.

When you create the Web page, specify the multicast address to which the client computer listens, as well as the sound format used for audio compression. Store the Web page in the appropriate distribution point on the HTTP server to make it available to clients.

For more information, see the NetShow Client SDK.

  4. Use the Windows NT Recording Control to adjust the sound.

Before making the multicast generally available, test the sound volume at a client and adjust it if necessary.

For more information, see Setting Sound Source and Volume for RTP Audio.

  5. Start the sound source, and use Manage Programs to start the program to begin the multicast.

For more information, see Starting and Stopping a Program.

  6. Clients can now listen to the multicast by retrieving the Web page with the embedded control.
