TITLE: ALSA Sound Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 - Update 8 Errata

VERSION: Update 8 Rev. C
DESCRIPTION:
This package contains the software that enables the Intel HD ALC262 Sound Chip
in the listed workstation models running the listed operating systems.

NOTE: This package is NOT compatible with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update
8 or previous kernels. This package is for the Update 8 Errata kernel ONLY!

- For the Update 5 kernel, use HP SoftPaq SP31527 (or later).
- For the Update 6 kernel, use HP Softpaq SP32882 (or later).
- For the Update 7 kernel, use HP Softpaq SP33288 (or later).
- For the Update 8 kernel, use HP Softpaq SP 34269 (or later).

All the listed SoftPaqs are available from the www.hp.com website.

NOTE: The following list contains known issues for this software:

- To adjust and unmute system volume, use 'alsamixer'. Using the default
desktop volume control provided with the operating system does not enable
control of the internal speaker.

- A ''Depmod error'' may occur when installing the ALSA-driver. This error does
not effect sound performance. This issue is planned to be fixed in the next
release of the software.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download the .tgz file to a directory on your hard drive.

NOTE: If the downloaded file ends in anything other then .tgz, rename the file
to xw_alsa_audiosupport_SP34613.tgz

2. Unpack the .tgz file by using the following command:
'tar -xvzf xw_alsa_audiosupport_SP34613.tgz'.

3. Change to the 'xw_alsa_audiosupport_SP34613' directory.

4. Change to the appropriate RPMS directory, as indicated in the following
list:

- To install the SoftPaq on a xw9400 workstation using the i386 architecture,
change to the 'RPMS/xw9400/32bit/' directory.

5. Once in the correct directory for your platform and architecture, execute
the following commands to install several rpm packages. Choose the set of
commands that is appropriate for your architecture:

- To install on the x86 architecture, execute the following commands, in
order:
'rpm -ivh alsa-driver-1.0.11-1_xw9400errata.i386.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-lib-1.0.9-1_xw9400errata.i386.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-utils-1.0.9a-1_xw9400errata.i386.rpm'

6. Run 'alsamixer' to unmute the 'Aux-In', 'iSpeaker' channels. Also unmute
'front' and 'mono' if they show up on your workstation.

Use the 'm' key to unmute/mute each channel and use the up/down left/right
arrow keys to adjust volume and move from one channel to the next. If using
'alsamixer' generates an error, then run 'alsaconf' and follow the
instructions, accepting the default choices, and then run 'alsamixer' again.

You can now use the default 'Volume Control' to maintain audio volumes.
