TITLE: ALSA Sound Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3

DESCRIPTION:
This package contains the software that enables the Intel HD ALC260 Sound Chip 
in the listed workstation models running the listed operating systems.

NOTE: The following list contains known issues for this software:

- Playing CD audio through the CD player does not work. The ALC260 sound chip 
CODEC is currently under development to fix this issue (visit 
www.alsa-project.org for more information). To play CD audio tracks, use a 
sound application such as KAudioCreator (/usr/bin/kaudiocreator) to save the 
tracks to your hard drive, and then play the tracks using xmms.

- A ''Depmod error'' may occur when installing the ALSA-driver. This error does 
not effect sound performance. This issue is planned to be fixed in the next 
release of the software.

PREREQUISITES: 
- The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Operating System with Update 5 must be 
installed on the workstation before installing this SoftPaq.

HOW TO USE: 
1. Download the .tgz file to a directory on your hard drive.

NOTE: If the downloaded file ends in ''.tg'', rename 
xw4300_alsa_audiosupport.tg to xw4300_alsa_audiosupport.tgz

2. Unpack the .tgz file by using the following command:
'tar -xvzf xw4300_alsa_audiosupport.tgz'.

3. Change to the 'hp_xw4300_alsa_audiosupport' directory using the following 
command:
'cd hp_xw4300_alsa_audiosupport' 

4. Change to the appropriate RPMS directory, as indicated in the following 
list:

- If installing the SoftPaq on a workstation using the x86 architecture, change 
to the 'RPMS_x86_audio' directory.
- If installing the SoftPaq on a workstation using the x86_64 architecture, 
change to the 'RPMS_x86_64_audio' directory.

5. Change to the directory that is appropriate for your processor 
configuration, as indicated in the following list:

- If in the x86 directory, then change to the 'up' directory if the workstation 
is configured with a single processor or change to the 'smp' directory if the 
workstation is configured with multiple processors.
- If in the x86_64 directory, then change to the 'smp' directory (64 bit 
architecture only uses a SMP kernel for both SMP and UP systems).

6. Execute the following commands to install several rpm packages. Choose the 
set of commands that is appropriate for your architecture:

- If installing on the x86 architecture, execute the following commands, in 
order:
'rpm -ivh alsa-driver-1.0.9b-1.i386.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-lib-1.0.9-1.i386.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-utils-1.0.9a-1.i386.rpm'

- If installing on the x86_64 architecture, execute the following commands, in 
order:
'rpm -ivh alsa-driver-1.0.9b-1.x86_64.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-lib-1.0.9-1.x86_64.rpm'
'rpm -ivh alsa-utils-1.0.9a-1.x86_64.rpm'

7. Execute the following command:
'/usr/share/doc/alsa-driver-1.0.9b/snddevices'

8. Execute the following command:
'alsaconf'

in response to all ot
